Welcome to Rooted - The Creative Counsellors Journal

Rooted is a free publication for counsellors, coaches and therapists who work across a range of counselling modalities and draw on creative and expressive approaches in their practice. The journal is grounded in the belief that creative ways of working are not an add-on to counselling but can play a central role in understanding and supporting human experience. Creative approaches can deepen insight and support clients when words are difficult to find.

The journal explores how creative counselling is practised, developed, and understood across different therapeutic contexts. Its pages include articles on creative methods and therapeutic practice, alongside news, events and developments from across the creative counselling community. The journal also offers space for reflection and expression, supporting counsellors’ wellbeing and providing opportunities to share artwork, creative writing, and other forms of creative expression. The journal sits within the wider Creative Counsellors community, alongside training, CPD, events, and shared spaces for connection. It forms part of a broader commitment to supporting practitioners and facilitating an ongoing conversation about creative therapeutic practice.

Contributing to the journal

Rooted is shaped by the voices and creativity of its community, and submissions from members are warmly welcomed. We invite a wide range of contributions, including reflections on practice, explorations of creative methods, visual art, photography, creative writing, poetry, and articles that share news, projects, or events. This journal is particularly intended as an invitation to those who may not usually consider submitting to a publication. Formal academic writing is not required, and contributors do not need to submit fully polished work. The editorial process is supportive and collaborative, offering guidance and encouragement while respecting each contributor’s voice and intentions.

If you would like to contribute, please request a submission proposal form by emailing editor@creativecounsellors.org If you have an idea you would like to discuss before submitting, you are very welcome to get in touch by email. A small number of spaces are available for anyone wishing to advertise their services, by offering a donation to the community.

I am delighted to have been invited to become editor of Rooted: The Creative Counsellors Journal. From a young age, I dreamed of being an author, and my love of words, stories, art, and imagination has continued to shape both my personal and professional life.
After eighteen years as a secondary English teacher, I retrained as a counsellor and now hold Diplomas in Person-Centred Counselling and Person-Centred Creative Arts Therapy. I am passionate about working creatively in the therapy room, using art, sandplay, image, and other expressive methods to access layers of meaning that words alone cannot always reach. I continually witness how these gentle approaches support insight, connection, and understanding.
As editor, my hope is to create a journal that reflects the wisdom, creativity, and diversity of our community - beautifully crafted, inspiring, and supportive of counsellors to deepen their understanding and enhance their practice.
